Championing Children | A social and emotional curriculum framework for Primary Education

Championing Children is a social and emotional whole class tool for Primary schools. It is part of current doctoral research at the Institute of Education and has been tested and edited by Primary teachers over the last 7 years. This tool enables teachers and children to reflect on their class capabilities, and work on an area of social and emotional development without adding to the curriculum.

"Social and emotional capabilities are often sidelined. And yet they underpin learning and are a significant indicator of a person's future success. This values-led tool spotlights children's capabilities such as self confidence, healthy relationships between pupils, communication when engaging in group work or self regulation. It is time to go beyond what is tested and measure what we value."

SCHOOL TESTIMONIALS

Using the Capabilities Curriculum has been a very important part of my own development as a teacher. I have found it far too easy to get caught up in the business of assessment for academic progress and attainment and losing my focus on children's readiness to learn and skills for being successful in life, rather than in academic terms. The first time Rebecca came to teach alongside me, she showed me how easy it is to focus on life skills in each and every lesson just by switching my own mindset and tweaking my lessons to show the children in my care, how learning opportunities gave us the chance to practise and develop the life skills outlined in her curriculum. The skills the curriculum focuses on have allowed me to assess my class in a very different way, looking at them as individuals and as a group and plan meaningful opportunities to help them develop the skills they need to be regulated, communicative, good problem solvers, good team players and able to cope with the challenges that life inevitably throws at us all. Rebecca inspired me to be a better teacher in so many ways; she showed me how focusing on the skills we need to be successful in the world trumps all other endeavours of the primary school teacher but also leads to better academic outcomes anyway."

— Sally, class teacher.

Championing Children has been revolutionary in how we understand and support our learners beyond the National Curriculum, focusing on personal development and the child as a whole. It not only brings clarity to the complexities of children's needs but empowers teachers and leaders with practical strategies that make a real difference. It adds depth, compassion, and structure to our work—reminding us why we do what we do. It’s a resource that is embedded in our provision and has a positive impact on pupil development, both individually and as a class, as well as staff. I’d highly recommend it to any educator or leader striving to make lasting, meaningful change in the lives of children
